I penned my first piece for the New York Times’ weekly magazine, a Letter of Recommendation essay about my relationship with a beloved Indian South African cookbook, Indian Delights. On one level it’s about the book and its formidable editor, journalist and anti-apartheid activist Zuleikha Mayat, but it also touches on history, migration, divorce, loss, and reconnection.
