Sara,

Sharing an incident.
Marine Plaza hotel: Nariman Point, Mumbai, two young guys visiting a French super rich as one a drug dealer among two to supply a dose of hash. The other guy naively volunteered to just accompany. They entered in a little smoky chamber yet comfortable and were calmly welcomed to rest themselves. Asked the French, anything to drink, while they reply their choices, French dude proactively placed three glasses on table. Seeing this, the drug dealer immediately replied, my friend doesn't drink, he is not part of the same game. He is just kind of my family acquaintance coming with me. French is like, oh he doesn't drink, not even water. All having a laugh...and French respectfully handed a bottle of mineral. The next in line was the smoke and he shared his pipe to which the guy himself replied, sorry I don't smoke. To his surprise, French guy, around 50, well-built, vice president of mutual fund division of largest Indian Bank inquired: What is wrong with you? Do you have a girlfriend atleast? A little blush and smile, the guy said yes. French inquired, did she ask you to quit? Oh no-no, I am a Brahmin and thus I abstain from liquor/smoke/non-vegetarian food. French didn't like the argument a bit and presented if these are to be abolished then why in first place God even created a possibility of such things in universe. He said, I am not saying you should drink/smoke but atleast someone is needed to experiment before to conclude on something. The poor Brahmin was bombarded with quite few arguments to which calmly responded, sir with due all respect, may I say that may be not myself but I have learnt from other's experience. I hope that is enough for me to conclude. French, O.K., point taken and what if I share my experience too and I tell you that my productivity level are amazingly high when I dope myself with hash. I don't over do it and within my limits I used productively. To cite further even famous poet Omar Khayyam was on drugs when he wrote few of his best composition. What would you say to such an experience? The young poor Brahmin was finding difficult to get few arguments and was taken in his thinking.
French further added...understanding your limits is I believe should be the argument. If you can't take it, it doesn't suit your body/health, I am fine with that.....but I believe may be religion alone is not sufficient to complete the argument.

Brahmin fellow had something to take from the discussion and was really confused to whether take a step to try it or better stay as he was....

Haha! I loved the waiter's reaction... Twice I've had a cake in (on separate occasions in the SF/Bay Area) that had alcohol in it and when I complained the servers had this expression of "so what?" Anyways, keep up the great writing. :)

Hi,
I recently turned 30, and also experienced this rude awakening. My Dad was hospitalized and Mom passed away (rather suddenly) within 3 months of me hitting the big 3-oh. Thanks for sharing.
