I have lived in India for 2 years now and just recently went to Goa. One day, my daughter asked me lay in the lounge chair facing up so she could pour water on my hair without wetting the rest of my body. As I laid there, I saw the beautiful tall palm tree next to me. Suddenly I realized the amount of coconuts at the top of the tree. I drink coconut water twice a day. I am so familiar with how heavy and hard those coconuts are, that I could feel how that could kill me if it fell on me, even worse, my daughter. During that holiday I developed the fear of falling coconuts. I couldn't walk anywhere near trees without being tense and looking up. Is there a name for this phobia?

I've definitely battled with similar emotions during my childhood. Luckily, my parents would place board games outside of my door on Christmas for a couple years in an effort to cushion my heartbreak over the absence of a tree. And I just LOVED your idea about the magical Eid Elf.... I hope that when/if I become a mommy, I can find a way to make Eid celebrations even more exciting then Christmas ones.

You know, Christmas is a hard holiday with which to cope for Muslims. I totally remember growing up Christmas-deprived, and in my wiser days I guess I've learned to live in a Christmas-less space, mostly because that holiday still feels strongly intertwined with Christianity. Halloween is the one that I like to champion. While its origins are still in Christianity, I just don't see anything subversive about kids running around in costumes to collect candy.
